Here is a very nostalgic look back in time to my high school years (1965-1968) and what this 17-year old future architect was creating in Mrs. Kelson’s art class. She gave us free reign to explore different medias, materials and subjects.
Being a “future architect”, I gravitated towards visualizing the built environment and illustrated houses and interiors, sketched outdoor scenes and even dabbled with collage. I entered a number of drawings into the Connecticut state Scholastic Art competition and received an award in the student portfolio competition. I graduated in 1968 and entered into the architecture program at Rhode Island School of Design!
Mrs. LaVerne Kelson - my art teacher during high school.
High School Photos. I was just another normal teen, hanging around after class, photographer for the year book committee, dancing at the Junior Prom with my girl friend Peggy (notice her BIG hair) and looking cool in corduroy.
Interior Perspective. I remember laying out this 2-point perspective “by eye” and painting my dream house. What on earth was I thinking? Sure am lucky I didn’t show this to RISD or they would have never let me into the college!
Urban Sketches. The Trudy’s sketch was done plein air in downtown Manchester while the street scene was illustrated from a magazine photograph.
Ink Wash. This painting of the House of Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts was first painted in color, then an ink wash applied over the entire image area. I later wiped away the ink, exposing the color beneath.
Paper Explorations. This series of collages involved different applications of tissue paper, opaque colored paper and mixed media.
Line Drawings. I loved sketching in pen and ink. The tractor drawing was with a ball point pen on rough finish paper. The studio sketches were of other students in art class.
Quick Gesture Sketch. I drew another student with a felt tip marker on colored paper. The painted outline added contrast to the drawing.

You draw beautifully! What's your favorite medium? People would love to have someone draw their dream houses for them, too! This way, they could translate them better in real life once they start realizing that dream.
